Crochet Hook: meaning and how to work it

The crochet tool, a shaft with a hook at the tip. Sizes are given in millimetres, such as 2.5 mm, matching the shaft diameter. The thicker the yarn, the bigger the hook.

How to work it

  1. Beginners should pick a 4–5 mm hook with 8-ply yarn so the stitches are easy to see.
  2. For amigurumi, go 0.5–1 mm smaller than the yarn label suggests for tight stitches.
  3. Rubber or ergonomic handles are more comfortable for long sessions.
  4. Hold the hook like a pencil or like a knife. Both are correct, so use whichever feels better.
