Pattern

This heart keychain is a great project for beginners learning to crochet in the round. It is worked in one piece, so there are no sides to sew together. Once you are comfortable with it, you will be ready for small amigurumi like our crochet puppy keychain.

The pattern uses US terms and is worked in a continuous spiral without joining rounds. Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round.

First hump

  1. Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
  2. Rnd 2: inc x6 (12)
  3. Rnd 3: sc in each st (12)

Cut the yarn, pull it through and set aside.

Second hump

Repeat Rnd 1–3 as for the first hump, but don’t cut the yarn.

Joining the humps

  1. Rnd 4: 12 sc around the second hump, then carry straight on to the first hump and work 12 sc around it (24). The two humps are now one shape.
  2. Rnd 5: sc in each st (24)

Shaping the point

  1. Rnd 6: (4 sc, dec) x4 (20)
  2. Rnd 7: sc in each st (20)
  3. Rnd 8: (3 sc, dec) x4 (16)

Stuff through the opening, filling the humps first.

  1. Rnd 9: (2 sc, dec) x4 (12)
  2. Rnd 10: (sc, dec) x4 (8)

Add a little more fill at the point.

  1. Rnd 11: dec x4 (4)

Cut the yarn, leaving 15 cm. Thread it through the front loops of the last four stitches, pull tight to close the point, then weave it in.

Finishing

  1. There will be a small gap between the two humps. Sew it closed with the tail from the first hump so no stuffing shows.
  2. Attach the key ring’s chain to a stitch at the top centre of the heart, right in the dip between the humps. Tie it with yarn twice for strength.
  3. Weave in all ends.

Tips

  • For couple keychains, make two hearts in different colours.
  • You can embroider initials in a contrasting colour before Rnd 8, while the opening is still wide.
  • Forgotten how to do an invisible decrease? See invisible decrease in the glossary.
