Granny Square: meaning and how to work it

A classic square motif crocheted from the centre out in clusters of double crochet. Many squares can be joined into bags, blankets or cardigans.

How to work it

  1. Start with a magic ring, or 4 chains joined into a ring.
  2. Round 1. Chain 3 (counts as 1 double crochet), 2 dc, ch 2, then (3 dc, ch 2) three times. Join with a slip stitch.
  3. Next rounds. In each corner (ch-2 space) work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Along the sides work 3 dc in each gap.
  4. Change colour at the start of a round for the layered look you see on our bags.
