Pattern
This tulip is the base of a crochet bouquet. One stem takes an afternoon, and after three or five you’ll have a small bouquet to give away.
The pattern uses US terms and is worked in a continuous spiral (rounds are not joined with a slip stitch). Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Need help with the stitches? See crochet for beginners.
Bloom (petal colour)
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
- Rnd 2: inc x6 (12)
- Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
- Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x6 (24)
- Rnd 5–9: sc in each st (24), 5 rounds in total
- Rnd 10 (petal tips): (sl st, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sl st, sl st) x3 (24)
Cut the yarn leaving 15 cm, pull it through and weave it in on the inside of the bloom. You’ll have a cup with three pointed tips, like a tulip just opening. For a fuller bloom, add a little fill to the bottom of the cup.
Stem (green)
- Rnd 1: 5 sc in MR (5)
- Rnd 2–30: sc in each st (5), 29 rounds in total
Slide the floral wire or pipe cleaner into the stem once it’s about 6 cm long, then keep crocheting around it. Cut the yarn, leaving 20 cm for sewing.
Leaf (green, make 1 or 2)
- Ch 13.
- Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook: sl st, sc, hdc, 6 dc, hdc, sc, sl st (12)
- Ch 1, turn to the underside of the chain and work along the other side in the same order: sl st, sc, hdc, 6 dc, hdc, sc, sl st (12)
- Sl st into the starting point. Cut the yarn, leaving 15 cm.
Assembly
- Push the top of the stem about 1 cm into the magic-ring opening at the base of the bloom.
- Sew the base of the bloom to the stem with the green tail, going around the stem twice for strength.
- Sew the base of the leaf to the stem, about 4 cm below the bloom.
- Weave in all ends and trim neatly.
Tips
- For a bouquet, make 3, 5 or 7 stems in different colours, tie them with ribbon and wrap them in kraft paper.
- The petals come out pointier if you snug the yarn a little as you work the tr in Rnd 10.
- See magic ring and increase in the glossary.
